Google has definitely been making a name for itself lately. Named after the numerical anomaly of a one followed by a hundred zeros, Google is quickly on its way to successfully listing as many sites within their database. Recently acquiring its most prestigious client to date, Yahoo! Search Directory's Web page listings, they pride themselves in being the fastest growing search engine on the Internet both in data and in popularity. The relatively plain and simple interface design illustrates their philosophy of providing clear, relevant search results without all the unwanted clutter they claim their competitors deliver.

AltaVista has undergone reconstruction in the last several months and along with those changes, now offers what they deem a "multi-dimensional search" capability provided by AltaVista's own Raging Search (www.raging.com). Raging Search technology sorts through their index to find exactly the pages AltaVista's visitors want. There are many ways to judge whether a Web page is relevant to a user's query, and Raging Search combines many different factors to find the best matches, including text relevance and link analysis. AltaVista has added a vast array of products and services to its repertoire, hoping to add value to its users' overall experience and stay competitive in the search engine arena.

AOL Search combines many sources of information make a more complete and comprehensive experience for its users. America OnLine Search uses the Open Directory Project as its backbone; however, in addition to the ODP, AOL scours the rest of the Internet and adds thousands of additional sites. AOL Search quickly and thoroughly searches the full text of over 150 million pages on AOL and the rest of the web. The main listings for categories and web sites come from the Open Directory. Inktomi search technology also provides crawler-based results, as backup to the directory information. Before the launch of AOL Search in October 1999, the AOL search service was Excite-powered AOL NetFind.

Yahoo! Search Directory is one of the most widely used of all Web search tools. Yahoo! is an attempt to organize and catalog the Web through the use of human editors who personally review each site which is submitted. Creative Approaches will go through the process of manually submitting your site for review to Yahoo! as well as help you choose a category to which is suitable to submit your site. Yahoo! uses categories to organize its Web Site results. Most often a search on Yahoo! brings both Web Site results and Web Page results. The Web Site results are suggestions made by the many editors gathering data, and the Web Page results are supplied by Google, which recently replaced Inktomi as Yahoo!'s database and search technology provider.

Open Directory Project (dmoz.org) is similar to Yahoo in the sense that real persons review sites listed on this search directory. They claim a rigorous effort is made to remove (or not include) from their lists any site which uses spam, any site which is not relevant to the keywords they've chosen nor a site that is poorly designed. The Open Directory is a "self-regulating republic where experts can collect their recommendations, without including noise and misinformation." Anyone who feels as though they are qualified to maintain a category within ODP is asked to do so. Open Directory has an important role: not only is the information contained in its database highly relevant, it is also highly sought after. ODP fuels several other search engines such as Ask Jeeves, HotBot and Lycos, to name a few.
