Studies show that 85% of all Web users begin their web sessions at Search Engines and Search Directories to find products, services and information. Click here to learn more about what it means to conduct an Internet Search. However, research shows that users only will look as far as the top 30 search results in order to find what they need. If your web site is not found within these top 30 results, chances are slim that a potential customer will be able to reach your site before turning to your competition.

   


 
 

Search Engines provide businesses with a very unique challenge. Rather than competing against other types of storefronts in a mall or along a commercial street in your locality, potential customers are seeking out products among several businesses who offer the same services and products. The good news is that when a potential customer searches for products or services your company offers via a Search Engine or Search Directory, they are narrowing their focus and providing you with a qualified potential lead. The bad news is that your business (web site) is made available to them among a group of hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of your direct competitors. You have invested time and money into creating a useful, informative and attractive Web site. You will not have the opportunity to be considered as a vendor if your site is not among the search results -- and even more importantly among the top 30!

CASE STUDY: "It's Lonely at the Top"
A client came to us for an evaluation on their status with the Search Engines. Upon completion of their site, it had been submitted it to the major search engines with several keywords in place. About five weeks after submission, we checked to see how the site ranked for those keywords. The site ranked number one for a search on the phrase "Steel Fabrication Chassis" which seemed promising at first. Upon further investigation, we found that our client's site was the only site displaying on the Search Engine for that keyword. We suggested a revision to the keyphrase to "fabricated steel chassis".

   


 
  CASE STUDY: "Dissappearing Act"
A site can "fall from grace" if Web Positioning isn't performed on a regular basis. One of our clients, whose Web site we developed, chose not to sign up for Web Positioning Service intially. One of the keywords that they decided to have us place in their META tags was "Turnkey Assemblies". As part of our development services, we merely submitted the site to a number of different Search Engines without continuous optimization of the site after it's initial development. The site ranked #19 on GoTo.com soon after submission. Five days later the site did not appear at all in the listing of only 13 sites. This is a good example of how the list can change completely from time to time as the Search Engines change the rules. On AltaVista a search for this phrase showed a ranking at #23. However, five days later the site had dropped to #56 out of 77. Needless to say, the company now concentrates most of it's advertising budget on Web Positioning.
